This landlocked country, officially known as the Republic of Malawi, is located in southeastern Africa, with Zambia to the west, Mozambique to the east, south and southwest, and Tanzania to the north and northeast. It is also affectionately called "The Warm Heart of Africa" because of the friendly people there. Now, on a more caffeinated note, coffee was only introduced to the country by British colonists in the 1890s. By going against the established markets for timber, peanuts, tea and tobacco, it was only when the country became independent in 1964 that coffee seemed an economically useful crop. For the last 4 to 5 years, we as Viva Sara have been working closely with a group of small coffee farmers in the North of Malawi. They are united in the Phoka Coffee Growers Cooperative. Satemwa helps us process their parcel and we help them export to Europe.
